UM Students: Get Involved

Student Docents

Meeting Museum staff members, curating an online exhibition, developing tours for UM Staff and public, working with children and families on the weekends, and meeting teens in the Museum are some of the possible activities you would undertake as an UMMA Student Docent. This program invites you to be creative and enthusiastic as you interact with patrons in the galleries and offers you time to meet staff members and to peek inside Museum operations. It provides an introduction to museums in general and to museum education in particular.

Interested UM students are invited to submit an application to the program (see below). Student Docents will be introduced to the collections, to museum education, and to visitor services. All participants are required to attend meetings on Thursdays, 4–6 pm, and to work approximately four hours per week on diverse tasks. Information sessions will be held on Thursday, September 6th and 13th at 4 pm. Undergraduate Museum Studies Program students may use this as their internship requirement.

Application: If you are interested in applying to this program, please send the following information to Pam Reister (preister@umich.edu) by September 4th, 2012 (late applications will be considered up to September 17, depending on space): Name, email, phone, major/minor, graduation date (year). Also state whether or not you are a Museum Studies Program student, and include why you are interested in being a student docent and what experience you would bring to the program.
