UMMA: The Museum Reimagined

Imagine a Museum that bridges University and community, art and learning, generations and cultures….

Almost 100 years ago, the cornerstone was laid for Alumni Memorial Hall at the southwest corner of the University’s central campus. In 1946, this building was designated to house the University’s burgeoning art collections, and in 1967 the University of Michigan Museum of Art gained exclusive use of the building, where it remains to this day.

Now, UMMA has embarked on a $48.9 million fundraising campaign—the largest in its history and part of the University’s capital campaign called The Michigan Difference. Physically and conceptually, UMMA will “reimagine the museum,” creating a new kind of university art museum for Ann Arbor and for the nation, one that unites community and scholarly interests in fresh, compelling ways and enhances public life through the visual arts.

$41.9 million will be targeted toward the long-awaited expansion and renovation of Alumni Memorial Hall; an additional $7 million in endowment will help assure the Museum’s long-term financial well-being and take UMMA to a new level of achievement, securing its place as one of the great university art museums in the country.

The building project includes a 53,000 square foot addition with new galleries; state-of-the-art storage facilities; educational spaces such as an auditorium, classrooms, and “object study” classrooms; an expanded art conservation lab; improved visitor amenities; and substantial restoration and renovation to its current facility.

Designed by Allied Works Architecture, Portland, Oregon and its principal architect Brad Cloepfil, the UMMA project has already won a coveted design award from the American Institute of Architects New York Chapter.
