Summary

The University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA) is hiring a University Learning and Programs Manager. Reporting to the Mellon Foundation Curator for University Learning and Programs (ULP), you will perform administrative and teaching tasks to enhance the museum’s engagement with university learning and research. You will provide communication and support for ULP and campus partners. Additionally, you will create and facilitate learning experiences with UMMA’s collection and exhibitions, and develop strategies for using, displaying, and interpreting collections and exhibitions for both university and broader audiences. The University Learning and Programs Manager also designs and implements professional development and mentorship activities for UMMA student employees.

The salary range for this position is $60,500-65,000. This hybrid position requires 3-4 days on campus in Ann Arbor, MI per week.

Responsibilities

  • Manage Administrative and Reporting Tasks (40%)
    • Manage the university class engagement schedule through communication and planning with faculty partners, ULP staff, and UMMA facilities and security.
    • Communicate with UM faculty members from various disciplines.
    • Facilitate the use of UMMA’s study rooms in partnership with the Registration Department; manage the movement of artworks from storage to study rooms, and oversee student Art Handlers.
    • Manage data collection and analysis for ULP activities for quarterly and annual reporting.
    • Master the use of UMMA internal and public collection databases to support colleagues and faculty.
    • Use tools like Asana, Google Workspace, Collective Access, Qualtrics, InDesign, and Canva to support ULP activities.
  • Facilitate Learning and Research with UMMA’s Collections and Exhibitions (40%)
    • Design and implement UM course engagements across various disciplines. Lead UM course visits.
    • Participate in ongoing training for UMMA educators and stay updated on best practices in museum teaching.
    • Create learning resources, visitor guides, and teaching guides for special exhibitions and UMMA’s collection galleries for various audiences.
    • Participate in staff work groups as requested and promote university learning methodologies, UMMA DEI goals, and UM students’ interests.
  • Develop Student Employee Professional Development Activities (20%)
    • Collaborate with the Education Program Manager to design and implement professional development and mentorship activities and cohort-building for all UMMA student employees (including the Student Advisory Board) to ensure a cohesive experience for all.

Required Qualifications*

  • Advanced degree or equivalent experience in museum learning, museum studies, cultural studies, or higher education.
  • Experience communicating with diverse groups, including public speaking, writing reports, and creating instructional materials.
  • Experience managing administrative tasks, including coordinating schedules and activities.
  • Experience designing and leading interdisciplinary instructional experiences that cater to diverse learning styles and needs.
  • Experience working in a collaborative environment.
