Relive UMMA’s Best Concerts With This New Playlist

Need a springtime pick-me-up?

Good news—UMMA is now on Spotify, and we’ve put together a great playlist of musicians who have performed at the museum over the years. The most famous is probably Jack Stratton, who performed at UMMA in 2010 under the name “Vulfmon,” and later went on to form the band Vulfpeck (the first-ever artist to headline a sold-out show at Madison Square Garden without a manager or record label). Others include the Flint-based singer Tunde Olaniran, the indie rock band the Kelseys (named after UMMA’s neighbor, the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology), and R&B singer MEBO, whose song “Coping (Get Over)” has nearly one million streams. Enjoy some smooth jazz while you read, some Afrobeats for your afternoon walk, or a mariachi band serenading you at dinner.

“Draw a line that represents progress.” That was the first prompt for students when Cameron Gibelyou’s Applied Liberal Arts class Predicting the Future met with UMMA this fall. Curator for University Learning and Programs David Choberka introduced this simple art-making prompt as a way to start students thinking about how progress and the future can be visually represented.
