The Sex Ed Class You Never Had

The Sex Ed Class You Never Had*

What’s with those creepy fake babies people have to carry around in high school? What do Subarus, porn, and Judith Butler have in common? Is toothpaste a queer ally?

All of these and more are questions not really answered in The Sex Ed Class You Never Had.*

This sexpartite video series (see what we did there?) explores things like awkward first crushes, "learning" from the internet, and what you'd take into outer space. The topics for each were inspired by *not* straight forward conversations with U-M students and local community members about their own personal lives and viewpoints.

*By “sex ed class” we mean these videos are creative interpretations of stories we collected about high school, love, friendship, the universe, and queerness. But we did include some campus and community resources below.

Lessons

Part 1

Intro to Storytelling: How to Say 'No' to Babies

The first episode in this very mini-series proposes that maybe love isn’t like a story book. Maybe it blossoms while being forced to care for a robot baby in a misguided attempt to teach parenthood to teenagers. Sorry, that was oddly specific.

Part 2

Health and Human Development: Are Straight People Okay?

Have you ever been in that uncomfortable situation when an authority figure divulges details of their sex life? We have! And you know what, good on them; authority figures have needs too.

Part 3

Computer Literacy: Clearing Your Browser History and Other Survival Techniques

How much of what we know about life came from our guardians or teachers and how much came from clandestine Google searches? Reminder: incognito mode is your friend.

Part 4

Advanced Storytelling: Jack and the Beanstalk and Other Queer Allegories

This episode returns to story-book-land. We get to go back in time and see when the blossoms of love were just magical seeds named Jevon and Savannah.

Part 5

Political Science: Utopia Is a lot of Pressure

What if you could get away from this f*cked up world and explore new ones? What would you want to leave behind? What would you want to take with you? Escape has its benefits and drawbacks.

Part 6

Astronomy: (F*** It, We’re Leaving)

We’re going to end this series with a seriously bopping tune about queers in space. Good luck getting it out of your head.
