Zell Visiting Writers Series: Fiction Author in Residence Andrea Lee

All Fall 2021 Zell Visiting Writers Series events will be offered live in a Zoom webinar format. Pending public health considerations and guidance from the university, readings and Q&As may also take place in person (with limited capacity) at the University of Michigan Museum of Art's Stern Auditorium. Andrea Lee is a American writer whose books often deal with themes of expatriate life, clashing cultures, and nuances of identity, particularly among Black Americans. She is most recently the author of Red Island House, a novel set in the tropical African island nation of Madagascar. She is also the author of the story collection Interesting Women, the novels Lost Hearts in Italy and Sarah Phillips, and the National Book Award–nominated memoir Russian Journal. A former staff writer for The New Yorker, she has written for The New York Times Magazine, Vogue, W, and The New York Times Book Review. She grew up in Philadelphia, received her bachelor's and master's degrees from Harvard University, and subsequently moved to Europe, where she presently lives with her family in Turin, Italy.

The Zell Visiting Writers Series is a reading series presented by the Helen Zell Writers’ Program in partnership with the University of Michigan Museum of Art, with support from the Department of English Language & Literature, the Office of the Vice President for Research, and Janey Lack.
