This question, and many more, are at the heart of a recent University of Michigan class, speaker series, and U-M Museum of Art gallery reinstallation that explores the latest thinking in representing the African continent and its various cultures in an exhibition setting.

Artist Jim Cogswell, in a talk on September 7, 2017, explored his installation Cosmogonic Tattoos, a visually stunning and rhythmic procession of vivid, but fragmentary images installed on the glass walls of both UMMA and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology.

Since 2012, when the Mellon Foundation first began funding positions at UMMA whose main task is working with university classes, UMMA has made engagement with classes that address issues such as race, class, and gender a central priority of our contribution to university learning.

Christo will talk about past and upcoming projects during a joint lecture from the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design Speaker Series and UMMA.
