Partner with multiple teams at the University of Michigan Museum of Art to create beautiful materials and branding for Museum exhibitions and programs. You’ll help bring UMMA’s projects to life by creating exciting, fresh designs that will help the museum attract new and diverse audiences.

Potential projects include:

  • Creating environmental signage to help update Museum branding and wayfinding;
  • Work with curators and project teams to design gallery graphics for special exhibitions and collections galleries (title wall graphics, gallery labels, printed materials including gallery guides, brochures, etc.);
  • Developing look and feel treatments for new programs and event series that can be translated to both print and digital executions;
  • Producing advertising materials for upcoming Museum exhibitions and programs;
  • Help re-envision the look of UMMA Magazine

Required Characteristics

We are looking for a designer excited by the idea of redefining what a campus art museum can be. We have several projects in the works for which a strong, creative, visual partner is needed to help realize the potential of our vision. You must be comfortable working on projects large (i.e. a new magazine concept; banners for the side of buildings) and small (i.e. design for an Instagram story) with a collaborative team from across the museum. Experience working with printers and fabricators is essential as several of our projects involve unique materials or specifications.

Desired Characteristics

Illustration skills are not required but often helpful. Experience designing graphics for use on native websites and digital advertising platforms is also beneficial. InDesign and SketchUp experience desired but not required.

Time requirements

This will be a contract, project-based role. You will have the ability to accept or decline projects based on your own schedule and bandwidth.

Payment

$60/hour – payment provided based on submitted invoices for services rendered.
This is a project-based position, you will be a U-M Vendor, not be a temporary U-M employee.
