Description

Subject Matter:

This photographs depicts Fountains Abbey, a Cistercian monastery in North Yorkshire, England, near the village of Aldfield. The Abbey is seen from a large brick archway, partially covered in ivy, which may be an entry point to the complex. Two female figures approach the archway, offering the viewer a sense of scale. There is another brick archway along right-hand margin, and a bell tower in the background. This image, like most of Frith's photographs, would have advertised the picturesque qualities of the ruins of England.

Physical Description:

Ivy-covered archway and Abbey in partial ruin, with two female figures in the foreground and a tower in the background.
