Description

Subject Matter:

Mimeguri Shrine is in Tokyo, on the East side of the Sumida River. Presumably, the river depicted here is the Sumida River. There are many depictions of this famous shrine. This area is a very walkable location as the shrine is located between two other major shrines.

These women are most likely of a higher class. Judging by their wear and accessories as well as their leisurely stroll, we can tell that these women were not of the working class. Furthermore, Torii Kiyonaga was notorious for painting beautiful women. He concentrated a lot of his work on depicting famous and elite beauties of Japan.

Physical Description:

This print depicts three women taking a walk. There are two more women in the distant background and three other people grouped in the background as well. The three women in the foreground look towards the left. Two of the women, closest to the right side share a parasol. The woman on their left walks toward them and wears a predominantly black kimono. The scenery behind them depicts fields, a river, and a town. There is a small vertical inscription on the lower left and a seal on the lower right.
