A student of Ralph Albert Blakelock, Kitchell is best know for his paintings of forests and natural landscapes, and often used dark, rich colors. In this painting, Kitchell used warm colors to depict a grassy clearing in a wooded area, with golden sunlight peaking through the clouds. Sunlight is a focal point in many of Kitchell's landscape paintings.
