Description

March 28, 2009
Judging from other portraits of Pope Innocent XI, this medal presents an excellent likeness of this ascetic and austere pontiff. The artist, Girolamo Lucenti, displays great skill in the handling of various textures, as can be seen in the broad planes of the pope’s robe and the roughened stole draped over his shoulders. Yet these features are secondary to the subtle modeling of the wonderfully craggy face, which results in a powerfully insightful portrait of an exceptionally able pope.
