During this drop-in workshop as part of Study Days at UMMA, participants will learn to fold, tie, and use repeat methods to create unique designs on silk handkerchiefs. Participants will learn the basics of indigo dye and hand-dye their own handkerchief in a vat of organic indigo to create a unique and useable art piece. All materials will be provided.
Indigo dye has a unique quality of relying on oxygen to deliver its beautiful hue. Watch your fabric change color before your eyes with just a few dips in this natural dye vat. You will learn a few basic folding techniques to create repeat surface design patterns upon fabric using simple tools such as wood blocks, rubber bands and string.
