Photography and Video Requests
UMMA welcomes requests to use the Museum as a setting for personal photography and video, including wedding, engagement, graduation, portrait, and similar shoots.
Because UMMA is an active public museum and event venue, all photo and video shoots must be requested in advance and approved before they take place. This helps us avoid conflicts with museum programs, private rentals, and other gallery activities.
Before You Request
Please review the following guidelines before submitting your request.
Public Hours and Space Access
Approved photo and video shoots may take place during regular museum hours, while UMMA is open to the public.
Approval to photograph or film at UMMA does not reserve space for your group. Galleries, stairways, the Apse, and other public areas remain open to all visitors during your shoot. You may not ask visitors to move, leave an area, or pause their visit.
Private access outside of public hours may be possible only through a formal event rental agreement, which includes rental fees, contracts, and staffing requirements. Please visit UMMA’s Event Rentals page for more information.
Scheduling and Approval
Requests must be submitted in advance using the form below. UMMA will review your requested date and time against the Museum calendar.
Approval is based on availability and may change if a museum event, rental, installation, or operational need arises. We recommend submitting your request as early as possible and confirming details close to your planned date.
Approval to photograph or film at UMMA does not reserve space for your group.
Photography Guidelines
During your shoot, you and your photographer/videographer must follow all Museum policies and staff instructions.
Please do not:
- Use flash photography inside the galleries
- Use tripods, light stands, or other freestanding equipment inside the galleries
- Block doorways, stairwells, elevators, gallery entrances, pathways, or works of art
- Touch, lean on, or place belongings on walls, pedestals, platforms, cases, railings, furniture, or works of art
- Move furniture, signage, barriers, or other Museum property
- Disrupt other visitors or interfere with their experience
- Film or photograph other visitors without their consent
UMMA staff and Security may ask you to adjust or stop your shoot if it interferes with visitor experience, gallery safety, museum operations, or the protection of artwork.
Copyright and Image Use
Artwork may appear in the background of photos or video taken at UMMA. You are responsible for determining whether your intended use requires permission from an artist, artist estate, rights holder, or other copyright owner.
This may apply if images or video will be used for commercial, promotional, portfolio, advertising, editorial, publication, or revenue-generating purposes. Examples may include photographer portfolios, vendor websites, paid social media promotion, wedding blogs, magazines, advertisements, or commercial video projects.
UMMA does not secure copyright permissions on your behalf. By photographing or filming at UMMA, you assume responsibility for any permissions, releases, licenses, or claims related to your use of images or video that include artwork, visitors, staff, or Museum spaces.
