Donati, Enri
Description
Subject Matter:
In the early 1950s, Donati experimented with texture and color by adding dirt to his pigments. Although this piece is black and white, the artist's careful manipulation of the medium created variation on the paper that implies texture and dimensionality. Donati was born in Italy but moved to New York in 1940 after a period in Paris, and was considered a highly influential member of the Surrealist movement—although this work shows an affinity with Abstract Expressionism.
Physical Description:
This drawing has an abstract composition in black ink. A thick, dark band outlines an amebous shape. Different textures and lines appear throughout the shape. The title is signed and dated (l.r.) "donati 1955".
