#4—1952
Donald Thrall
Description
Subject Matter:
In this painting the brushstrokes and blending of red and blue with an overlay of black paint is highly expressionistic, perhaps indicating an inspiration of the Abstract Expressionists, active at this time. Donald Thrall attended college in Michigan and lived in Detroit, Spain, and New York City. In 1955 he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for Fine Arts.
Physical Description:
This abstract painting is a crowded design of red, blue, and black paint. The black lines function like leading in a stained glass window, creating structure for the red and blue paint beneath.
