Description

Subject Matter:

This image depicts a workshop, identified as a carpenter's shop by the title. The center of the frame is the entrance to the shop, again framed by two large doors that are propped open. Above the doors are three windows, each with a sill containing potted plants. Inside the shop, four men work, and two young boys walk in, the one on the right carrying a basket. The human subjects are minimized, whereas the formal qualities and shadows of the architectural elements become the main subject of the composition.

Physical Description:

A photograph of an open shop front with four men inside. Two young boys walk toward the large open doors, one carrying a basket. Above the doors are three windows with potted plants on the sills.
