Description

Jacque delighted in depicting the denizens of Barbizon on the edges of their villages on their way to or from work at sunrise or sunset. This etching shows a shepherd who is bringing back faggots gathered in the forest. Yet these creatures are only incidental to the artist's real interest: natural effects of atmosphere. In this proof he has added lines in the left and right areas to increase the impression of rain and shadow.
