Description

Subject Matter:

This print is of a woman of the Imagawa clan who claims to be descendants of Seiwa Genji by way of Kawachi Genji. Seiwa Genji was a family of imperial descendants of Emperor Seiwa.

Momokawa Choki was a ukiyo-e artist best known for his ambient backgrounds with bijin-ga, or portrayals of beautiful women. His life details are obscure and is supposed to be a student or adopted son of Toriyama Sekien. He signed his paintings differently depending on the style they resembled. "Choki" was for Kiyonaga styles and "Shiko" was for Utamaro styles.

Physical Description:

This print depicts a woman seated looking down. Beside her on the left of the print is a man on the ground holding an abacus. On the upper right corner is a block of text. On the bottom right corner is a small circular seal.
