Description

Subject Matter:

In this photograph, United States Navy Admiral Andrew Hull Foote sits at a slight turn in the lower-left corner. His penetrating gaze is directed slightly upward. His piercing expression, as well as his arched shoulders and the sword that lies across his lap, all suggest he is about to spring into action. The backdrop is almost completely blank, which serves to decontextualize the sitter. Foote served largely in the Western Theater along the Mississippi River during the American Civil War (1861-65). Here he poses for Mathew Brady, who produced a large number of cartes-de-visite of various Union Army and Navy officers during the war.
