Subject Matter:
In this photograph, United States Navy Admiral George Washington Storer cuts a severe figure as he stares out at the viewer. He tucks one hand into the breast of his dark overcoat. The backdrop is mostly a blank, gray void. This photograph was originally produced by the studio of Mathew Brady, who made a large number of such cartes-de-visite of Union Army and Navy officers during the American Civil War (1861-65).
