Subject Matter:

Two unidentified figures, one male and one female, are shown here in the midst of an acrobatics routine, perhaps preparing for a lift as he holds her foot at his waist and she has her arm around his shoulder. Heckel was a member of the German Expressionist collective Die Brücke in the early twentieth century, and he was known for his woodcuts with elongated people and simple forms.
