Subject Matter:

Halsman's name was on Einstein's list of artists and scientists to receive emergency visas during World War II, allowing the photographer to escape France. Halsman began visiting Einstein at Princeton in the years following. This particular image was taken in 1947, on his third visit. In this portrait, Einstein solemnly looks at the camera, his white hair combed back but still unruly. Halsman wrote that Einstein was discussing the ramifications of his work on the Manhattan project as this photograph was taken.
