Subject Matter:

Lombard was a professor of physiology at the University of Michigan Medical School. He began making etchings in 1916 for the joy of it and continued to do so until his passing in 1939. When he first began making etchings he would spend a great deal of time hiking around Monhegan Island in Maine where he summered. These early works often included seascapes, boats, and large nature scenes. Later in life however as his mobility decreased he turned to more detailed fragments of nature such as this alder spray.
