Subject Matter:
The building depicted is the detached belltower—or campanile—of St. Mary's Parish Church in West Walton, Norfolk, England. The church was built in the 13th century, and exemplifies the Gothic architectural features that Arms, who trained as an architect, admired above all other styles.
The print was No. 1 of Arms' "English Series", and was etched for the Print Makers Society of California.
Physical Description:
A Gothic-style church tower is seen in the middle distance. It dominates a cloudless sky in the upper portion of the image, with trees rising behind the lower portion of the building and a single story outcropping of the building expanding to the tower's left. The architectural details, especially the carved stonework and patterned brickwork, are rendered with precision.
Signed and dated lower right on plate: "John Taylor Arms. 1937". Signed and dated lower right below plate in pencil: "John Taylor Arms 1937".
