Arch: Margarita

Description

Michigan sculptor Susanna Linburg’s "Arches" series was inspired by the ruins of a Greek colony on the Italian island of Sicily. Linburg was fascinated by the timeless balance between the masses and voids of classical architecture as well as its fragmentary state. She tried to create a sense of harmony and order by evoking the classical post and lintel system (columns supporting a horizontal member). She also tried to give a sense of the vitality of classical Greek architectural forms. In "Margarita" the slender columns suggest strength, but rather than supporting the expected solid lintel, they support a welter of curving forms that explode into a disordered ruins.
