Subject Matter:

Rising to fame in the 1980s as part of the East Village artists, Kostabi is known for his slick commercial-looking paintings and his self-interviews that he published as a reflection on the commodification of contemporary art. His early works, like this one, were surrealist influenced and very different from the smooth and shiny paintings for which he's most well known. The title seems to suggest a late-night party or night on the town in which the devil stands in for the return to work that will end the fun.

Physical Description:

This ink drawing on paper has a black wash ground, with two figures drawn in opaque black ink. On the right, a comic figure, in only boxers and a pointed hat, dances. His right leg has been kicked through a television set that he holds with his right hand. Scissors fall from his left hand towards what looks like a two-slot toaster on the ground. A black, horned beast lurks in the background, holding a phone overhead that has two earpieces, attached together with no cradle.  In the background, a headstone-shaped form silhouettes the dancing figure.

The drawing is signed and dated in ink (l.l.) "KOSTABI 1984".
