Ascent Series

Description

Australian Vic Wood’s initial study of wood forms resulted from working turned pieces to create wall plaques; however, he is best known for his exquisite lidded containers, which have become his trademark.
Appropriately titled, Ascent Series seems to hover just above the surface it rests on, ready to gracefully flutter away at any minute. In the piece, Wood merges a square form with a spherical one, creating a fluid appearance.
The grain, color, and texture, which are revealed as Wood works with a piece, stimulate his imagination and provide him with inspiration. He approaches woodturning by exploring the form created on the lathe and manipulating the medium to reveal insights into new forms often previously obscured.
