In June 1885 the New-York based American landscape painter and architect Jasper Cropsey and his family were forced to sell their mansion (located in Warwick, New York) and relocate to more modest living arrangements in Hastings-on Hudson, N.Y., a village on the east back of the river just north of Yonkers. The splendid views of the Hudson and the Palisades commanded by his new home’s high location made the Hudson River a constant source of inspiration during the last fifteen years of Cropsey’s life. Although Cropsey’s output of his late years has been criticized for being formulaic and repetitive, this painting is noteworthy for the attention to close detail and faithful view.
