Beauty Seated on a Bench, after Miyagawa Chôshun
Kobayashi Bunshichi
Description
Subject Matter:
This woman appears to be enjoying her time outdoors. The fan in her hand is an Uchiha and the objects next to her seem to be a sort of wagashi or Japanese traditional sweet snack. The surroundings potentially suggest an early fall or late summer.
Kobayashi Bunshichi made this inspired by Miyagawa Chôshun's style. Miyagawa Chôshun was a painter of the Miyawgawa school and never dabbled in printmaking. His work featured "beauties" such as the woman depicted here. This work and Miyagawa Chôshun's work have striking similarities.
Physical Description:
This colorful woodblock print depicts a woman seated on a bench in a colorful and elaborate kimono. She looks down toward a fan in her hand and sits next to small objects on the bench. The background depicts a river and trees. There is an inscription on the bottom right. Beside the woman on the left edge is a two-lined vertical inscription and a red seal that follows.
