Description

Subject Matter:

Created from a distance, this photograph depicts a wide view of a bay of water with a bright, cloud-streaked sky stretching overhead. In the distance, slightly off center to the right, a black horse strides through the water. As evidenced by the horse’s presence, the water must be deceptively shallow, yet the dark ripples on the water’s surface give no indication of that being the case. The camera was at a slight angle, causing the far horizon to rise upwards to the right.  The effect lends the spacious yet minimal image an off-kilter dynamism. In the far distance, a thin strip of land is hazily visible, and the dark shapes of two ships dot the horizon. The solitary and unexpected nature of the lone horse’s presence lends this image a magical and dreamlike quality.
