Description

Subject Matter:

Réincarnations du Père Ubu is a book of prints by French artist, Georges Rouault. Père Ubu refers to a character in the play Ubu Roi by French writer, Alfred Jarry. From around 1916-1939, Rouault was commissioned by Ambroise Vollard to make prints for several books.

Rouault studied under Gustave Moreau, and was influenced by Rembrandt and Moreau in his early work. Religion was a major theme is Rouault's art beginning in 1904.

Physical Description:

This print shows a profile of a small, bear-like man from the waist up. He is balding, with a fringe of hair by his neck but none in the center of his head. He wears a light colored, loose fitting garment with thick, dark outlines articulating the parts of his clothing. The background is very dark.
