Subject Matter:
In this photograph, Frith (or, more likely, one of the photographers that worked for his studio) captures the repetitive patterning of an arcade of columns at the musjid (mosque) in Boorhaupore, India (called Burhanpur today). The position of the camera at the far interior end of the colonnade emphasizes the decorative patterning of the arches and frames the landscape view in the background at the far end of the building. While this photograph was likely taken for commercial or touristic purposes, it reveals the aesthetic interests of photographing architecture at an early moment in the medium's history.
