Like his mentor Josef Hoffmann, Peche was trained as an architect before joining the Wiener Werkstätte; he became its artistic director in 1915 and the founding director of the Zurich branch of the firm just months before the end of the First World War in 1917.
This vessel consists of two square shapes: the bowl, comprised of eight serrated leaves or blades arrayed vertically, the tips of the blades bent outward, and its inverted square counterpart, which serves as the foot to the bowl. The balance between geometric clarity and the naturalistic rendition of plant forms gives this vessel a witty quality quite different from the austerity of Hoffmann’s vase.
Subject Matter:
Like Josef Hoffmann, Peche was trained as an architect before joining the Weiner Werkestätte. This bowl dates from the years during which he ran the Zurich branch of the firm (beginning in 1917).
