Earthenware ceramic bricks or qingzhuan (青磚) were in architectural use since the Warring States period (475-221 BCE) and were in common use by the Han Dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE) to construct floors, walls, stairs, roofs, and tombs. They were produced in a variety of shapes and sizes and display a vast array of motifs, including pictorial scenes. Bricks used for flooring commonly display geometric and parallel line motifs.
