Description

Although the face is damaged and the pigments are gone, this figure displays two characteristic "mudras" or hand positons of symbolic importance. The left hand extended up with the palm outward is in the "abhaya" or protection "mudra". With fingers held down and palm turned outward, the right hand is in the "varada" or charity "mudra".

Subject Matter:

A heavily worn miniature image of the Buddha, standing, with his right hand lowered in vara mudra (the gesture of charity) and his left hand raised in abhaya mudra (the gesture of reassurance).
