Subject Matter:
This photograph was created looking down from a tall building towards an urban scene below. Occupying the center of the photograph’s composition is a rectangularly-shaped rooftop garden. The garden itself is divided into curved, rounded islands of greenery, around which wraps a white walkway. In the central island, a smattering of aloe plants sprout against the darkness of the grass. The disorienting perspective of the photograph makes the rooftop garden appear to be on the same plane as the traffic and pedestrians walking below. Located in Rio de Janeiro, this garden was designed by Burle Marx, a prominent Brazilian landscape architect. The curvaceous shapes that make up the garden are representative of much of his work.
