Subject Matter:
Exploiting the mechanical sharp-edge precision of the screen-printing technique, Warhol faithfully reproduced seemingly banal images of various Campbell’s soup can labels, which were devoid of any trace of the artist’s hand or personal involvement in their production.
He chose an instantly recognizable subject that had mass appeal and spoke to his love of the American consumer culture, producing numerous editions as a way of emphasizing his fondness for making art out of mass-produced objects but also mass-producing the art itself.
