Cane Train, Cuba
Dmitri Baltermants
Description
Subject Matter:
In this photograph, a young mustachioed man stands just right of center as he gazes toward the left out of the picture plane. With his right hand he appears to signal toward train cars full of sugar cane. A fellow worker stands with his back to the viewer in the distance on the right-hand side of the image. The piled sugar cane appears almost to burst out of the cage-like walls of the train cars that can barely, which can barely contain their cargo. The focus of the camera seems to be on the cane, as it is in crisp focus, whereas the man in the foreground is slightly blurred.
Physical Description:
A man in the center foreground looks toward the lower-left corner of the photograph as he points to a train filled with wooden sticks.
