In this photograph, United States Navy Captain Bullers stands in a slight contrapposto as he gazes blankly out of the picture plane. A pedestal and a curtain trace the right-hand edge of the photograph and provide the main elements of scenery in the otherwise empty interior space. This photograph was originally produced by the studio of Mathew Brady, who made a large number of such cartes-de-visite of Union Army and Navy officers during the American Civil War (1861-65).
