Description

If from the Hamaden region, this rug is very traditional in its iconography. It includes a very crude Herati pattern, a motif common to rugs from this area of Persia. The Miribotha, found in the central border, is characteristic of Oriental carpets, although it is usually more pear shaped. The inclusion of human figures occurs in Persian rugs (as opposed to rugs from other countries such as Turkey, where it is against the religion to portray human or animal figures in the rugs.) From other examples, however, these figures are usually included in the main design, and not in such a scattered fashion as they are here. They appear here as an afterthought by the craftsman.
