Subject Matter:

Likely created during his time at the Bauhaus, this woodcut is characteristic of the cubo-expressionist woodcuts that he began creating in the early nineteen-teens. Feininger was particularly interested in architecture and especially treasured the gothic architectural style. In this print, he activated the simple cityscape with the dynamic diagonal lines of the background that transverse and intersect the buildings.

Physical Description:

This woodcut print has a small rectangular scene at the center depicting a large building. Thick lines in triangular patterns and patches make up the background of the scene. The print is signed (l.rl.) "Lyonel Feininger" in pencil by the artist. There is also a notation in pencil (l.c.) "T811a" and a stamp in black (l.r.) "Feininger Estate / G W No 30".
