Description

Subject Matter:

The Mexican-born child prodigy, Juan Soriano, who began showing at galleries at age 14, experimented with many different styles and movements throughout his career. From Fauvism and Expressionsim to Cubism and Surrealism, elements from each of these can be seen in this image of a cat. Soriano worked in Mexico City for many years alongside famous Mexican artists and intellectuals. In the 1950s, he moved to Europe where he spent extended periods of time in many cities, primarily based in Rome and then Paris.

Physical Description:

At the center-left of this print, a cat is standing at an angle so it is neither in profile or facing the viewer head on. Its tail is long and curled up in a crescent shape. There are cross hatching lines near the cat's feet that suggest it is standing outside in nature and the background is similarly textured a light grey. The print is numbered (l.l.) "9/15" and signed and dated (l.r.) "J Soriano / 54." in pencil.
