Description

Subject Matter:

The final print in George Tice's "Bodie" portfolio, named for the former gold town in eastern California, emphasizes finality in emphatic fashion. The image features the gates of Bodie's cemetery—graves feature in other images from this portfolio—backlit and cast in deep shadow. The gates are rendered even more intimidating by depicting them from below and setting them against a spectacular, moody sky that takes up the upper two-thirds of the image. By heightening strong contrasts between the light of the sun and the dark clouds that veil it, Tice presents the sky as quasi-apocalyptic and foreboding, a dramatic ending to his survey of the ghost town of Bodie.
