Description

Subject Matter:

In this photograph, United States Navy Commodore Charles Stewart Boggs sits at a slight turn with his face in profile. He is the picture of an aging gentleman; his tousled hair and wiry beard contrast with his crisp, dark suit ornamented with metallic buttons and a watch chain. His bony knuckles peak up from the bottom edge of the photograph in the lower-right corner. The backdrop behind him is mainly an ombré of light to medium gray tones. Boggs served in various capacities on the Mississippi River, in the Atlantic Ocean, and in the port of New York during the American Civil War (1861-65). Here he poses for Mathew Brady, who produced a large number of cartes-de-visite of various Union Army and Navy officers during the war.
