Description

Subject Matter:

Set in the Tuscan city of Florence, this photograph depicts a view of the medieval church of Santa Maria Novella. The church’s façade is symmetrically adorned with geometric patterns made of dark and light marble blocks. Spread out before the church is Piazza Santa Maria Novella, a wide, open space circled by palazzos and apartment buildings. In the left side of the composition, a marble obelisk stands erected in the piazza, another identical one in the distance. Supporting the marble block of the obelisk are four bronze turtles, one in each corner, which are clearly seen in the photograph. Next to the obelisk stands a wooden cart harnessed to a donkey. The pointed shape of the obelisk mirrors the shape of the clock tower to the church’s left.
