Description

Subject Matter:

Maruyama Oshin is known for being part of the Maruyama-shijo school which focused on naturalistic painting. Chinese art heavily influenced much of Japanese art and it could be said the subject matter could be attributed to such influence. The woman is of higher status due to her ability to read, dress, and hair.

Physical Description:

This hanging scroll depicts a woman seated at a stool leaning over a table. Centered to the right side of the scroll, the woman leans over a book and appears to be in the process of turning the page. She is wearing a multilayered robe. The outermost layer is lined with a blue design. There is an inscription on the bottom right of the page to the left of a leg of the table. Directly following the black ink signature is a red seal.
