Subject Matter:
In this photograph of a wooden statue from Huexotla, Mexico, Strand captures one of the religious effigies common in the region. This particular representation of Christ is adorned with a crown of thorns, a robe, and a rope that holds up one of his arms. His arm shows signs of the stigmata. His expression is pained. The statue is painted with life-like attention to detail, though stylized.
This photograph is from Paul Strand's The Mexican Portfolio published in 1967 by Paul Strand. The portfolio consists of a series of 20 images depicting Mexico's people, architecture, landscape, and churches. It was first published in 1940 under the name Photographs of Mexico, and reprinted under Strand's supervision in 1967 as The Mexican Portfolio.
