Description

Subject Matter:

This print shows a mass of figures, clearly human but abstracted and more fluid, crowded together in a confined space. On the right, some figures seem to be climbing the wall. Antúnez studied engraving in Stanley William Hayter's workshop (Atelier 17 in Paris) from 1947-1952; it seems that this print was created during that period. Antúnez titled at least one other print, from 1950, City Dwellers as well. His 1978 exhibition at Genesis Galleries Ltd., in Santiago, Chile, was also named City Dwellers.

Antúnez was a prominent Chilean artist, and exhibited throughout Latin America, and around the world. In 1955, he founded Workshop 99 in Chile and helped found the School of Arts of the Catholic University of Chile in 1959. Later, he served as the director of Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de Chile, and as a Cultural Attaché of Chile in the United States

Physical Description:

This is a black and white print of abstracted human figures gathered in a group.  Several of the figures lay on the ground.
