Description

Subject Matter:

This photograph of "Close No. 157, Bridgegate," from the series The Old Streets and Closes of Glasgow, depicts the narrow and dirty urban street in Glasgow, Scotland. This photograph was made before scheduled demolition. Between 1868 and 1871, Annan documented the urban slums of Glasgow as part of the Glasgow Improvement Act of 1866. This particular print is a modern contact print from the original glass collodion, printed by Thomas Annan's grandson in Glasglow.
